Optical waveguides, e.g. glass fibres, are joined to each other or to appts. such as transmitters, amplifiers, receivers, etc., using a splicing bush or tube made of metal, plastic or glass, the bore of the tube having a larger dia. than the outer diameters of the fibres being joined together. The bore of the splicing tube is filled with an immersion liq. having a viscosity such that when the fibres are inserted in the tube they are centered w.r.t. each other, i.e. the two fibres are on a common axis so that the cores of both are properly aligned.
