The piston of a shock absorber includes a facility to reduce the damping to a minimum when extremely high shock loads are applied. Normal damping is provided by flow through orifices passing directly through the piston. A sealing plate is spring loaded against the piston to seal off auxiliary orifices. A shock load of sufficiently high acceleration level induces a dynamic pressure on the underside of the sealing plate and this is displaced vertically to permit flow through the auxiliary orifices. In this condition the damping factor is substantially reduced.
