A leveller unit for levelling the coal in a coke oven comprises a levelling rod surrounded by a flame preventer channel, the front end of which fits against the edge of the levelling hole of the coke oven; the channel has inlet nozzles along its internal circumference pointing in the direction of the front end, these nozzles being connected to an air compressor. The flame preventer channel prevents the escape of inflammable gases and coal dust during levelling.
