The h.v. switchgear has a stationary set of contacts on one side of the bulkhead wall and a moving set mounted on a trolley on the other side. The two sets come into contact through holes in the wall. These holes are closed by cover plates whose open and close mechanism are linked to the trolley motion so that, when the latter passes a point a given distance from the wall, the cover plates are automatically forced open. The open and close mechanisms are operated by the drive system which moves the trolley towards and away from the wall.
