The Al-alloys are extruded in the un-solution treated state at such speeds and such reduction in areas that the extruded profile is heated to above its solution temp. at which it is maintained to permit solution to complete, after which it is cooled rapidly. The billet may be pre-heated to 100-300 degrees C prior to extrusion. The finished profile is kept warm or heated in a through furnace or insulating tube on exiting from the die. The process utilises the heat developed by the mechanical deformation thereby saving furnace heat.
