1411247 Alkyl aromatic JAPAN GASOLINE CO Ltd and KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO KK 29 Sept 1972 [2 Oct 1971] 44999/72 Heading C5E An alkyl aromatic distillate having a B.P. between 230‹ and 360‹ C. and a specific mean mol. number of added alkyl groups from 1 to 3 is produced by treating: (a) an aromatic hydrocarbon distillate of B.P. above 180‹ C., and having less than the specific mean mol. no. of added alkyl groups which have been introduced by alkylation by olefin, or (b) an aromatic hydrocarbon distillate of B.P. above 180‹ C. having more than the mean mol. no. of alkyl groups as defined in (a), or (c) a mixture of (a) and (b) or (d) a mixture of (b) and a heavy non- alkylated aromatic hydrocarbon oil of B.P. above 180‹ C., or (e) a mixture of (a), (b) and the heavy oil as defined in (d) with a halogenfree, solid acid catalyst of silica/alumina or crystalline alumina silicate at 150-450‹ C. for 0À5-10 hours under a pressure to maintain the materials in the liquid phase, and separating the required distillate by fractionation. The treatment may be carried out in the presence of ethylene, propylene or butylene. A heavy aromatic stock which is purified by hydrorefining may be used as the feedstock for the alkylation by olefin step which may be carried out in the same reactor using the same catalyst as the treatment step.
