The means for maintaining the platform rigid when moving in a direction E from the lower to the upper position comprises keep members 44 which are caused to engage in chain link plates 43 by fixed guides 35. As the platform begins to engage guide rollers 22 at the end of its upper horizontal run, the keep members 44 are disengaged from the plates 43 by springs (51), Fig. 4c (not shown), and the slats 21SP1/SP of the platforms are able to follow a curved path on their return to a load-carrying position. When the platforms are moved in the direction opposite to E, guides 34 at the upper level of the apparatus cause the actuation of the members 44 and the platforms are maintained rigid. The apparatus is fed and discharged by conveyers 37, 38.
