1522654 Packing liquids PONT A MOUSSON SA 28 Oct 1975 [8 Nov 1974] 44263/75 Heading B8T [Also in Division B5] A machine, e.g. for packing milk comprises an enclosure 1 defining a space which is swept by a sterile air stream, means for producing the air stream and, disposed within the space, a station 10 for producing containers R from a hot-formable material, a station 12 at which the containers are filled and a closing station 13. The air stream is drawn downwardly through the enclosure 1 by a fan (7), Fig. 2 (not shown), the air being recirculated through a pipe (8) to an upper chamber 3, whence it re-enters the enclosure 1 through a pre-filter 4a and a filter 4 for removing bacteria, &c. The containers 10 are formed in a mould 19, Fig. 3, comprising halfmoulds 20, 21, by extrusion-blowing heads 17. After moulding, the half-moulds 20, 21 are separated by a jack 22, and the containers R are released by heads 37. The containers R are then located on a plate 63 forming part of a transfer device, cutting means 157 being provided to separate them from the following blanks P to be moulded. The containers R are gripped by jaws 64, 65 of the transfer mechanism, Fig. 8 (not shown), and are advanced past a fixed cutter 72 which crops the scrap material D around the container necks, the jaws 64, 65 being reciprocated such that they grip and move the containers R during the forward stroke, and retract and release them during the return. The containers R are then located below filling heads 12, whereupon ball valves 75 are opened by electromagnets 76 to discharge the milk, &c., into the containers R through spouts 78. During filling the containers R are supported on plates 99 borne by parallelogram linkages 96, 100 loaded by springs 104, a proximity detector 108 co-operating with a strip 107 depending from a counterweight 97 to terminate filling in each case when a preset quantity has been dispensed. The transfer mechanism then moves the containers R to the closing station 13. Closures are cut from a band (112), Fig. 7 (not shown), fed into the enclosure 1 through a tank (110) of bactericide, by a cutter (120) and are heat-sealed to the containers R by pressing means (121). For disinfecting the filling heads 12 before or after use, a manifold 93 is attached to the spouts 78 via tube sections 87 and collars 91. A rod 92 is actuated to raise the spouts 78 and hence, via finger portions 82, to raise the balls 75 to open the valves, and washing fluid is applied through the manifold 93.
