Methyl 7 - [2# - hydroxymethyl - 5 - acetoxyla-cyclopentyl]heptanoate is prepared by the hydrogenation of methyl 7-[2#-benzyloxymethyl- 5 - acetoxy - 1 - cyclopentyl] - cis - 5 - heptenoate, resulting from the acetylation of methyl 7 - [2# - benzyloxymethyl - 5 - hydroxy - 1- cyclopentyl] - cis - 5 - heptenoate, obtained by esterifying 7 - [2# - benzyloxymethyl - 5- hydroxy - 1 - cyclopentyl] - cis - 5 - heptenoic acid which is made by reacting (4-carboxybutyl)- triphenylphosphonium bromide with 4#-benzyloxymethyl - 3,3a#,4,5,6,6a# - hexahydro - 2H- cyclopenta[b]furan-2-ol.
