Phenoxyalkanoic acid derivs. of formula (I) (where R1 and R2 are H, halogen lower alkoxy or lower alkyl; R3 and R4 are H or lower alkyl; n is 1, 2 or 3; and Z is OH or lower alkoxy), e.g. ethyl 2-(4-(2-carboniloylethyl)-phenoxy/ -2-methylpropionate, and their pharmacologically tolerable salts are new cpds. In animal tests (I) strongly reduce serum lipid levels without causing undesired side-effects; they can thus be used for treating atherosclerosis. (I) are also useful as intermediates for antibiotics with beta-lactam structure.
