3-Chloropropanol (I) is prepd. by (a) reacting 1,2-dichloropropene with metal- or NH4 acetates, (b) hydrogenating the 3-chloroallyl acetate obtd. in the presence of catalysts contg. Gp. VIII precious metals, pref. Rh or Co or Ni and (c) hydrolysis or alcoholysis of the 3-chloropropyl acetate obtd. (I) is a bifunctional intermediate for organic syntheses, e.g. for prepn. (i) of hydroxy-propylated amines, useful as monomers for synthesis of polyesters, and (ii) prepn. of detergents and therapeutic cpds. Hydrogenation of 3-chloroallyl acetate takes place with high conversions, e.g. 15-100%, and yields, e.g. 18-51%, compared to 87% conversion and 6% yields obtd. in 3-chloroallyl alcohol hydrogenation under the same conditions.
