The time assignment speech interpolation transmission system determines the difference between the last transmitted and stored code word and the new code word of that data source and compares this difference with a reference. If this reference is not reached, a logical '0' is generated as address and the code word remains stored; if the reference is exceeded, the new code word is stored and a logical 'L' is generated as an address for passing to the buffer store (12). The contents of the buffer store are synchronously transmitted over the transmission line and used at the receiver to reassemble the code words.
