Butanediol-(1,3)-1-mono-(3'-hydroxybutyrate)prepn. - by thermal rearrangement of butanediol-(1,3)-3-mono-(3'-hydroxybutyrates)

Butanediol-1,3)-1-mono-(3'-hydroxybutyrates) of formula (I) are new R2-CH2-CHOH-CHR'-COOCH2-CHR'--CHOH-CH2R2 (I) (where individual gps. R' and R2 are opt. same and denote H or an aliphatic gp). (I) are prepd. by reaction of butanediol-(1,3)-3-mono-(3'-hydroxybutyrates) of formula R2-CH2-CHOH-CHR'-COO-CH(CH2R2)-CHR'-CH2OH (Ii) at 120-220 degrees C. (I) are starting materials for prepn. of polyesters, esp. those stable to saponification polyurethanes, plastics and plasticisers. (I) can be reacted with fumaric acid or maleic anhydride for 8 hrs. at 180-200 degrees C to form polyesters which copolymerise with 30 wt.% styrene to a on-saponificaable, water-repellant resin, useful as swimming-pool lacquers, outdoor paints, weather-proof wood finishes. (I) can also react in 1:2 mol ratio with (meth)acrylic acid to form bi-functional monomers for synthesis of radiation hardenable lacquers, e.g. on wood, plastics, paper, metal, in combination with unsatd. polymers. (I) can form cross-linkable coatings which can be sprayed on and have high gloss.
