N-bromo-N'-chloro-5, 5-dimethyl-hydantoin (I) is made by reacting 5,5-dimethyl-hydantoin in aqs. alkali carbonate soln. (II) with Br2 and Cl2 at 0-15 degrees C in which (II), after addn. of ca. 0.5 mol Br2 per mol 5,5-dimethyl-hydantoin in the soln., is mixed with further alkali carbonate or alkali hydroxide soln. (or, separately, a small amt. of a wetting agent added) followed by addn. of ca. 1.5 mols Cl2 per mol 5,5-dimethyl-hydantoin in the reaction mixt.
