The synchronous motor has a wound stator (1) and a magnetic spring consisting of a stator part (7) and a rotor part (61). The stator part of the spring consists of a hard magnetic material in the form of a permanent magnet or an electromagnet while the rotor part of the spring either forms an integral part of the rotor or a separate part fixed to it. The stator part magnetic field is displaced by an angle with respect to the rotor field so that the motor stores energy for part of the time and then releases it later, thereby smoothing its torque characteristics.
