1467220 Feeding animals ALFA-LAVAL AB 21 Aug 1975 [21 Aug 1974] 34832/75 Heading A1M Apparatus for feeding animals such as pigs reared in a group comprises a trough 3 divided by portions 12 into as many feed troughs as animals in the group and a feed container 1 provided with a distribution wheel 2 which supplies feed at a predetermined rate to the trough 3 throughout the feeding period such that each individual trough receives the same total amount of feed and the feeding period is pretimed to last as long as it takes the slowest eating animal of the group to consume this total amount of feed so that each animal of the group eats the same amount of food. Since animals eat faster at the beginning of a feeding period, the distribution wheel 2 is driven by a motor with a variable speed changer according to a selected program by means of a pre-set control unit (in accordance with known technique) such that the rate of supply is greater at the beginning than at the end of the feeding period and gradually decreased inbetween. The total amount of food given at a feeding period may be varied from day to day and preferably the animals are foddered more than three times per day. Each individual trough is provided with a valve 11 for the supply of water from a pipe 9 by means of an animal operated plate 10. The front of the trough 5 is stated to be shallower than normal for example plates 7 and 6 form angles of 150‹ and 135‹ respectively, with the trough bottom 8, so that the animal can empty the trough completely whilst standing at right angles to the trough.
