Since animals eat faster at the beginning of a feeding period, the distribution wheel 2 is driven by a motor with a variable speed changer according to a selected program by means of a pre-set control unit (in accordance with known technique) such that the rate of supply is greater at the beginning than at the end of the feeding period and gradually decreased inbetween. The total amount of food given at a feeding period may be varied from day to day and preferably the animals are foddered more than three times per day. Each individual trough is provided with a valve 11 for the supply of water from a pipe 9 by means of an animal operated plate 10. The front of the trough 5 is stated to be shallower than normal for example plates 7 and 6 form angles of 150‹ and 135‹ respectively, with the trough bottom 8, so that the animal can empty the trough completely whilst standing at right angles to the trough.
