The two stage extending and contracting device for mounting on a vertically adjustable and rotatable support has a carrier construction attached to the support and which moves in coordination with it. A drive motor is mounted on the support and operates a first linear extension and contraction system by means of a horizontal piston. A hollow rod (74) is coupled to the piston and carries an inner rod. A second drive motor is mounted at the other end of this rod and operates a record sliding pistong to provide the second stage extension and withdrawal control. A holder head (96) and workpiece holder are also provided coupled to the inner rod.
