Continuous (partial) electroplating of strip - using insulating, immersed guide roll and continuous masking strip

In a method and appts. for continuous (partial) plating of strip in which the strip is passed through an electroplating bath by means of an electrically insulating rolls, the contact between the roll and strip is fluid-tight and the surface of the strip not contacting the roll is partially covered with an electrically insulating strip in a fluid-tight manner. One or more insualting strips can be used to mask simultaneously also be partially plated by providing grooves in the roll or by circulating electrolyte through an apertured roll. Used for plating strip with e.g. a noble metal such as gold, in the prodn. of electrical components such as contacts, supports for semiconductor elements and integrated circuits. A great variety of patterns can be produced accurately, rapidly, and cheaply.
