1528822 Glass fibre manufacture JOHNS MANVILLE CORP 7 Jan 1976 [27 Jan 1975] 462/76 Heading C1M Long or continuous glass fibres 56 are produced by introducing molten glass 26 into a rotor 34, and controlling and adjusting design and operational parameters (including density, viscosity and flow rate of the glass, peripheral wall (47) thickness, interior diameter and rotational speed of rotor 34, number and diameter of orifices 48, and head of glass h on interior of rotor wall) so that fibres of average diameter not more than 7 microns are produced, there being no hot gas blast attenuation externally of the rotor. There are preferably at least 40,000 orifices 48 of diameter not more than 12 mils. Preferably at least 600 lbs/hour of molten glass is fed to the rotor, whose interior is maintained at 1700-2100‹ F. by burners 28. The rotor preferably is of diameter at least 15", and peripheral wall thickness 1270-6350 Á, and is rotated at 2800-3000 R.P.M. The rotor may consist of, by weight, 0À28% C, 27À8% Cr, 2À5% Ni, 5À8% Mo, 1À8% Fe and balance Co.
