Process for the prepn. of opt. 7-substd.-3-formyl-7-amino-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acids (I) including their salts and lactonic hemiacetals by oxidn. of an opt. 7-substd. -3-hydroxymethyl-7-amino-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid (II) salt with hexavalent-chromium in a medium contg. 2-25% (pref. 10-20%) water or oxidn. of the free acid (II) with hexavalent chromium in a medium contg. 2-25% (pref. 10-20%) N,N-di(lower alkyl)-lower alkanoic acid amide. Cpds. (I) are useful as antibacterials or inters.
