Differentially dyeing textile by heat fixing at different temps. - to produce different shades in various regions of the textile

A textile web is dyed e.g. by dipping or a foularding process and then pressed to squeeze out excess dye. The dye is then dried and fixed by heating in a regular or non-regular environment so that different regions of the web are pref. heated differently and different final shades of the dye are produced. The fabric is then washed. Perfectly reproducible patterns in variations of shade can be easily produced. Pref. drying and fixing is carried out in the same operation. A linear temp. gradient may be applied across the web either by heated gas or steam or by passage of the web through a channel (e.g. V-shaped) whose walls are movable to vary the temp. applied to the surface of the web.
