METHOD OF MANUFACTURING WATERPROOF ASBESTOS FOAM

1448565 Waterproofed asbestos foam PROTEX CORP Ltd 9 Nov 1973 [9 Nov 1972] 52099/73 Heading D1P A method of manufacturing water-proofed asbestos foam comprises subjecting a solidified asbestos foam obtained by foaming a dispersion of asbestos fibres, to a heat treatment at a temperature between 100‹ and 500‹C, and then contacting the asbestos with a silane compound having the general formula wherein n = 1, 2 or 3 and Y is a labile group, preferably C 1 -C 4 alkoxy or halogen, split off during reaction of the silane compound with asbestos, the treatment being performed in the vapour phase in the presence of water vapour, preferably at temperatures between 160 and 250‹C. The silane compound is preferably methyl trimethyl silane or methyl trimethoxy silane or methyl triethoxy silane. The treatment may be performed in the presence of a catalyst e.g. dibutyl bislauryloxy tin.
