Alkali cellulose or cellulose ethers are made by passing a fibrous and friable mixture of appropriate, conventional ingredients through a double- or multi-screw press having a rectangular thread profile, one or more screws being counter-rotated with respect to the remainder. Suitably a double-screw press is used, having a greater depth of thread in the portion not occupied by the intake and a lesser depth at the intake portion, as illustrated in the Figure (not shown). The preparation of alkali cellulose from cellulose and NaOH, and carboxymethyl cellulose from alkali cellulose and sodium monochloracetate is exemplified.
