The bowls of an enclosed unit for processing continuous piece goods, are cleaned by varying their circumferential speed as they make contact with a forerunning or following length of fabric attached to the batch of goods being treated and at least part of the length of which has been soaked in a cleansing fluid. Esp. applicable to steamers with a double fabric feed, as well as for single feeding plants. Eliminates the necessity to cool off the installation and to have the operatives climbing inside. The fabric does not have to be removed during the cleaning operation.
