Deodorising of a gaseous flow, from stock-raising farms, abattoirs, sewage purificn. plants etc., is effected by passing it successively through a UV radiation chamber; a first washing chamber using acid and a second washing chamber with an alkaline soln. The effluents from the washing chambers are mixed in definite proportions so that the evacuated prod. is practically neutral. The gas to be treated enters by the duct and passes rows of vertical, tubular lamps emitting a narrow band of UV light; the radiation effect is increased by the reflective aluminium sheets of the chamber. The energy of the radiation is sufficient to dissociate the oxygen molecules present to form nascent oxygen which decomposes and transforms the organic molecules causing the smell. The gas passes into the chamber, filled with Raschig rings retained between two grids, where it is washed by sprays of an aq. acid soln. pumped from a lower tank. The gas then passes into a second chamber, similar to the first, but the rings are washed with an alkaline soln. delivered by a pump. The soln. removes the acidic cpds., the sulphides and the mercaptans. The deodorised gas is evacuated by a fan. Deodorization is thus effected cheaply in a simple plant. The effluents produced are easily eliminated.
