The over-load protection with return current characteristic for regulated power supply equipment comprises one or more parallel connected continuously operating adjusting elements which are controlled by means of a regulating amplifier. A monitor (Ts5, Ts6, Ts7) for current limitation and for blocking the adjusting element (Ts1, Ts2) is controlled in dependence on one or more measuring quantities dependent on the load of the adjusting element and by comparison of measuring quantities with a reference quantity which represents a load and/or temperature dependent response threshold. If transistors are used is adjusting elements (Ts1, Ts2) the load current and the collector-emitter voltage are detected as the measured quantity.
