Protection of works of art from atmospheric influences - in sealed glass unit filled with inert medium pref. noble gas

The process comprises inserting the work of art between a first covering glass layer in the form of a transparent pane or film, and a second covering glass layer. The space between the two layers is filled with an inert medium, then the two layers are joined together sealingly in the manner of a double glazing unit. The inert medium is pref. colourless, low-moisture protective gas of large mol. size, pref. a noble gas, to which may be added a moisture regulating agent e.g. a gas which forms a complex bond with water, or a solid material of higher internal surface area. The method may be used to protect stained glass windows, without optional pretreatment with silicic acid ester.
