The body can be designed to crush the ice (55) from above or break it up from below. In the former case the body has a conical lower surface (13) relative to the ice surface and is oscillated e.g. by a drive unit incorporating an eccentric. The vertical position of the body can be adjusted by a winch (30) whose lift cable incorporates an elastic coupling (35). The body is designed as an annular member which closely surrounds the column being protected. It is spaced from the column by four circumferentially spaced low friction guides at the top and bottom edges. Columns or pillars projecting above sea level in arctic waters can be endangered by forces exerted by ice forming on the surface of the water around them.
