A spindle appts. is claimed for use with a ring spinning or ring twisting machine, particularly a cord twister. An underwinding crown for underwinding the thread is located on the spindle below the spool but above the whirl, with a cylindrical mantle ranging up to a proud ring edge as a cutter acting with a blade. A thread catching pot surrounds the cylindrical mantle of the underwinding crown with an open top. Its circular base ranges outwards from the lower end of the mantle. A circular gap is located between its outer wall and the circular edge as far as the height of the upper end of the mantle. The design ensures that when the full spool is removed, the thread is parted easily without interfering with adjacent spools and, when winding flanged spools, the cutter does not sever the thread accidentally when the ring rail is raised.
