20.22-Dihydrocardenolide-glycosides are of general formula (I): (where R1, R3, R4 and R5 = H or hydroxyl; R2=(hydroxy)methyl or carbaldehyde; R6=H or opt. acylated hydroxy; Z=acovenose, arabinose, cymarose, oleandrose, rhamnose, thevetose, digitoxose, di-digitoxose, tri-digitoxose or tri-digitoxosemonoglucose; of which the OH-gps. are opt. substd. with alkyl or acyl; whereby two adjoining OH-gps. may be opt. substd. with alkylidene) The positive inotropic activity and thus the typical toxicity of (I) are strongly reduced when compared with the non-hydrogenated cardenolide-glycosides.
