The drop forging press comprises a bottom die and a top die each of which is fixed to a horizontal cooling plate by bolts set in a metallic support composed of a heat resistant alloy pref. of type TZM, Ni-Co alloy, or stainless Ni-Cr steel, and a thermal insulating portion composed of a refractory material pref. such as Al2O3, ZrO2, ThO2 or MgO. The central portion of one of the dies is shaped so as to reject the workpiece after forging. The dies are heated by an induction coil and a protective atm. to avoid oxidation during forging is given by two concentric and overlapping quartz tubes. The unit is suitable for the isothermal forging of Ti and Ni-base alloys or other alloys which exhibit superplastic properties. The design is such that heat requirements are minimal.
