Sol for prodn. of electrical insulators - prepd. by waterproofing reaction of montmorillonite, hectorite, tetrasilicate mica and/or taeniolite

Sol. of ultrafine particles having layered structure is prepd. by water-proofing reaction of (i) montmorillonite, hectorite, tetrasilicate mica and/or taeniolite with (ii) a titanate ester, zirconate ester, silane, titanamide, zirconamide, cationised silicon oil and/or beta-diketone mixed with laurylamine. The silane contains MeO-, EtO- or silanol gps. as well as vinyl-, epoxy-, acrylic- or amino gps. The sol. is used to produce heat- and water-resistant electrically insulating articles and coatings. Products made from sol. are not re-hydrated. Insulating properties are improved. vol. resistance exceeds 1012 ohm. Dielectric strength exceeds 3000 v/0.1 mm. Silicon-treated prods. are water-repellent. Heat-resistance of articles is improved. Reaction allows conversion of a hydrophilic sol. to a hydrophobic sol. with lipophilic properties. Layered materials coupled with silanes can be strongly bonded to synthetic resins, e.g. epoxy-, vinyl-, acrylic-, polyester-, melamine-, urea-, polyethylenephenol- or polypropylene resins.
