The seat belt tightening mechanism is operated by an explosive charge. A pressure vessel (7) filled with fluid is closed up at one end and contains piston carrying on its rear end a charge which can be ignited by an electrical impulse. The other end of the vessel has a removable head fixed to the vessel and carrying a nozzle with its opening pointing towards the vanes of the turbine fitted on a square shaft end. In case of a collision or sudden deceleration the charge is set off and pushes a piston towards the nozzle compressing the fluid which leaves the nozzle at high speed and to rotate the turbine. This rotation of the shaft causes tautening the belt around the user's body.
