To generate a visible image of an optically opaque, spatially extended structure, for example a part of the interior of a human body, this is "illuminated" with a beam emitted by an ultrasonic unit (206) and focused by an acoustic lens (202). The intensities of the rays reflected by the structure and projected back to the ultrasonic unit (206) by the lens (202) are evaluated by imaging electronics to form an image of the structure examined, which appears on a display device (220).
