Compsn. comprises 1-75% wt. metal alkoxide I of structure M(OC(O)OR)p(OR)n-p (where M is Ca, Mg, Ba, Cr, Sr, Zn, Al etc. n is valence of M, p is O to n and R is 1-20C hydrocarbon, 1-15C ether alcohol on 1-20C alchol) and 99-25% wt. (II) metal dispersion of water-insol. oxides, hydroxides and carbonates of Mg, Ca, Ti, Al, Zn, Ba etc. in dispersing agent (III) selected from 8-50C fatty acids, 8-50C tall oil acids, 17-50 C sulphonates and 12-50 C phenates. These compsns. are valuable for water shut off and for modification of water flows in sub terranean formations without affecting oil flow from adjacent formations. The modifications are relatively permanent yet easily removed by acid treatment when necessary.
