Treatment of solid and liq excrement from piggeries - by aerobic followed by anaerobic fermentation for prodn of combustible gases

Liq. manure, consisting of a mixt. of solid and liq. excrement collected from piggeries and stables where straw litter is not used, is treated by a process in which the material is mixed with straw and subjected to an aerobic prefermentation; this is followed by an aerobic fermentation. The gas holder tank has a false bottom and delimits a lower compartment beneath the active portion. Air is introduced into the lower compartment. The tank is fully insulated and has a movable cover with a water seal. All bad odours are suppressed and large quantities of combustible gas are evolved during the 2nd phase. An excellent manure is obtd. which can be transported and spread without causing a nuisance through smell.
