Reclassification of information in an information index is performed automatically by a data processing equipment with a central processor which contains programs for sorting the information according to certain criteria. Central processor time is reduced by using a microprocessor and microprogram to perform a repetitive algorithm. A memory (MC) containing locations and article codings is addressable through an address register (RA. A buffer (BF) permits reading and writing of indices on magnetic tapes (FE, FS) while another buffer (BM) permits transfer of data between a central memory and discs (D1, Dp). The index is manipulated by a microprogrammed microprocessor (muPG) in which the sorting program is controlled from a central process or (uC) using control memories (MKO). A table (T1) contains general information while a second table (T2) contains destination data.
