The tunnel type dish washing machine has the waste food washed off by jets of hot water, the larger pieces being retained by grids. This water is in a tank underneath, the used water draining back together with smaller particles. Water is recirculated by a pump. The water level is set below the mouth of an overflow pipe and the agitation of the water when the machine is working causes a small amount to overflow, taking the floating particles with it. Water level is maintained by a pressure responsive device, the consumption being reduced.
