Material is broken up in the usual manner to a depth a little below the wheel tracks or the undulations in the road surface, and is collected by two successive staggered worms each extending over upto half the working width, the sense of rotation and speed of each worm being reversible and controllable. With the aid of this combination of worms, the non-uniform material is spread evenly over the surface, raking and powder baffle plates being positioned behind each worms, and the levelled material is reheated. A second machine, following at a controlled distance the first machine is then fed with the new asphalt from a tipper-truck via a feed trough and to this machine can be connected, before the leveller, a mechanism for loosening prior consolidations caused by the movement of the truck or the machine. The nibble before being freshly covered is kept level over the whole width, intimately boded with the new mixture supplied during the vibration and consolidation with the aid of the prior plastification and the mat provided by the fresh mix and the materials blend together in a homogeneous manner.
