Fibre-reinforced Ag composite material (I) comprises continuous SiC fibres (II) consisting of beta-Si C, a Ag matrix (III), consisting of Ag, Ag alloy or a Ag-based composite, and very small amts. fo carbide (IVa) or solid C soln. (IVb) in (III). formed by reaction of free C on the (II) surface with (III). The (II) content of (I) pref. is 5-70 wt. %. (I) has excellent mechanical properties, thermal stability resistance to oxidn. and wear and electrical and thermal conductivity and is suitable for a wide range of applicationsin the electrical industry, for chemical equipment and as structural material. Claimed properties are a high oxidn. resistance, Mohs hardness of 3-8, tensile strength of 20-240 kg/mm2 at room temp. resistivity of (2.0-16.1) x 106 ohm.cm and thermal conductivity of 0.85-0.21 cal/cm.s degrees C.
