1487558 Walking aid G R KEEYS M NICHOLSON V REDFERN G J WEST and J F PHILLIPS 19 Feb 1975 [21 Nov 1973] 54013/73 Heading A6M A device for assisting a person to walk along a predetermined path comprises a support member, a guide rail extendable parallel to the said path, the guide rail having a longitudinally extending surface 9 or 25 including spaced recesses 10 or 26 into which the support member may be successively placed, and directing members 11 or 27, one in the vicinity of each recess, adapted to divert the support member into the respective recesses. The device is particularly suitable for assisting the climbing of stairs in which case a guide rail is normally placed on each side of the stairway. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 there are two surfaces 6 and 9. Surface 9 is for movement in the direction X normally down stairs whilst surface 6 is for movement in direction Y normally upstairs. Pawls 12 allow movement in one direction only. The embodiment of Fig. 3 is for movement in either direction. The device of Fig. 2 is formed from a U-section with a T-section welded thereto. The device of Fig. 3 is a box-section with groove 24 machined therein. Fig. 4 (not shown) illustrates support members that can limit lateral movement thereof. They can be made from wood. plastics or metal.
