Hydrostatic hyper-pressure press - uses ambient pressure at large submarine depths, e.g. 8000 metres

In a hydrostatic hyper pressure press., in which it is possible to alter the crystalline structure and atomic lattice packing of the widest variety of materials, metamorphically, the hydrostatic pressure of large submarine depths is transmitted directly and externally onto oversized pistons, whose inner surfaces are located in a region of low pressure generated by high pressure pumps. Used e.g. is prodn. of diamonds from graphite. The prodn. of metamorphic (metallic) hydrogen is also proposed as an application. The large pressures used do not have to be contained since at depths of e.g. 8000 m they are ambient. Diamonds can be produced at 200 degrees C (c.f. 2000 degrees C is present processes). The press. can have a much larger effective surface area than is possible in present hydraulic presses, e.g. 259 cm2.
