The built-in furniture units for kitchens, living rooms, etc. comprise individual elements (9, 13) in the form of cupboards and shelves etc which fit together to form units wherein a frame (1) comprising upright side pieces (2) and which is open at the front is to be mounted on the supporting wall. The side pieces (2) are connected together by transverse bases (3, 4, 5, 6, 7) whereupon the individual cupboard or shelf elements eg (9, 13) which are formed at least partially without rear walls are connected to the open front side of the frame (1) so that the bases of these elements lie flush with the transverse bases (3-6) of the frame (1). The dimensions of the frame and those of the individual elements are all on a common scale so as to give flush external contours. By removing the rear walls of some or all of the individual elements their useful depth is extended by the depth of the frame to increase the inside volume of the unit.
