The bottle handling mechanism for a fast running bottle cleaning machine includes a transfer position where the bottles (23) are lowered from holders (2) after travelling around a conveying wheel onto a nearly horizontal receiving surface (21) and come to rest on a horizontal surface just ahead. The descending bottles are guided by fingers (20) on the ends of L shaped arms mounted on a square cross bar (32). These arms form part of a linkage which includes rollers (41, 52) moving around a cam track. This causes the tips (33) of the fingers to follow a nearly vertical and slightly curved looped track (34) to give the required lowering action.
