The mower frame (1) has a motor (3) which drives cutter blades (4) rotating horizontally in a cowling (6) which opens to an ejection spout. The cut grass is blown into a grass box (9). The box is fitted to the mower frame by means of two trunnions (21) which are supported in two bearing lugs (19). A side wall of the box (10) has a grill allowing air to escape. The box has an emptying aperture (11) closed by a rectangular grill cover (12) pivoting on the mower frame. When the box is removed from emptying, the cover swings down under its own weight and the influence of springs (27) to cover the grass outlet (8), protecting the operator from stones and deflecting the cut grass into a neat swathe.
