An oil filled adjusting cylinder for e.g. a height adjustable seat, has an inner sleeve and an outer sleeve with the space between acting as a return path for the oil. Both ends are closed with a jack piston rod through one end, and a pump piston rod through the other end. Between the two pistons is a valve block. A volume compensating diaphragm is mounted in one end immediately behind the pump piston. The central fixed valve block houses a spindle with a spring around its base and with a washer held down by a nut to secure an elastic disc onto its top surface, which lifts to allow oil to pass through during pumping.
