Torpedo target proximity detector - uses series of charges fired in succession and shocks wave echo receiver mounted in torpedo casing

The equipment is used with a submerged torpedo for detecting the proximity of a target. It comprises a series of explosive charges fired in succession and a polarised receiver for the shock-wave echos reflected downwards. The charges may be detonators, each placed in a barrel drilled in a metal block accommodated in the top of the torpedo casing and open to the top. The barrels may be drillings running between the two faces of the block, the ends nearest the torpedo being closed by seals through which the detonator firing leads pass. The other ends communicate freely with the sea.
