The book binding machine has a glue container (3) down one side, and a compartment alongside, where the glued sheets (27) and covers (26) are pressed together. The bottoms of the sheets are clamped between bars (4, 5) which can slide to transfer the sheets from one compartment to the other, travelling on the ends (1) of the frame. An applicator plate (10) is raised and lowered by swinging arms (43, 44) into and out of the glue by an operating mechanism, and held against the bottom of the stack of sheets while clear of the glue. The stack is then transferred to the applicator compartment where a pressure member holds the appropriate cover against the glued backs, under the control of a mechanism (11, 12) at the end of the frame.
