A multi-track tape recording system for use in language laboratories allows the responses of the student to be recorded and overlaid with the programmed response. On a typical system there are two tapes, each containing two tracks (1, 2) and (3, 4). One tape (1, 2) moves in the opposite direction to the other one (3, 4). One tape may contain a series of questions on one track (1) and answers on the other (2). The user may record his version in the gaps between the prerecorded sections, for comparison purposes. The other tape may be used to hold vocabulary e.g. English-Spanish.
