The tablets of the invention consist of: a. A rapid-release portion consisting of 3 to 9% based on the total weight of the micronized nitrofurantoin tablet and 8 to 46% based on the total weight of the tablet of inert pharmaceutical excipients; and b. A slow-release portion consisting of 9 to 27% based on the total weight of the micronized nitrofurantoin tablet, 14 to 42% based on the total weight of the hydroxypropyl methylcellulose tablet having a viscosity of 90 to 120 cP and 8 to 42 % based on the total weight of the tablet of inert pharmaceutical excipients. /P P The invention applies in particular to tablets useful in human therapy for the treatment of urinary tract infections avoiding the undesirable side effects of nitrofurantoin.
